Laser solutions for packaging

Laser cutting and marking for the packaging industry

Perforating plastic films for fresher food

Our CO2 lasers precisely perforate packaging to increase the shelf life of food, give consumers more time to enjoy it and reduce waste.

Fast and flexible scribing

Our CO2 lasers scribe easy-tear lines on food pouches and sachets, retaining airtightness until opened. The same laser can mark, perforate or cut packaging for the industry.

Clean, permanent marking

Our CO2 lasers eliminate ink, solvents, chemicals and plastic ink cartridges that are used in inkjet printing.

Laser cutting, perforating, scribing and marking packaging

How laser cutting for the packaging industry improves speed, hygiene and flexibility

Our CO2 lasers are widely employed within the packaging industry, where applications include cutting, perforating, scribing and marking. The laser perforates ventilation holes in plastic film for packaging fresh produce, scribes lines to make “easy tear” openings in plastic pouches, and marks information on cardboard boxes, plastic bottles and painted metal cans.

Laser processing is generally fast, clean and flexible. Our CO2 lasers are available in three different wavelengths, allowing each process to be optimized for different plastic packaging films.

Marking is done without ink, eliminating both consumable costs and mess. Perforation and scribing processes can be precisely controlled, and specifications can be modified on the fly.

Laser marking packaging

Beyond laser packaging cutting, the technology is highly effective for marking applications. The laser ablates the inked coating on paper and card packaging materials, leaving a clear, high-quality mark. Contrast depends on the background color but is generally very good. Laser marking packaging applies variable information such as best before dates, batch codes, barcodes and 2D Data Matrix codes on the production line, on the fly, with the information being updated continuously as required.

The laser marking process is quick, clean, and reliable. Marks are indelible and tamper-proof, and consumable costs are effectively non-existent once the laser coder is installed. This makes laser coding an attractive alternative to traditional ink-based technologies.

Our CO2 lasers perforate holes in plastic packaging film

Laser perforating packaging

Laser perforation of plastic packaging films can increase the shelf life of certain fruits and vegetables, compared with unperforated packaging. So-called modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) technology uses laser-perforated holes to regulate the levels of oxygen, carbon dioxide, nitrogen and other gases inside the pack, maintaining the freshness of the produce inside.

Our CO2 lasers are used to perforate holes at regular intervals across the plastic packaging film. The optimum conditions vary according to product type, so the hole size and spacing must be precisely controlled. The laser process is flexible: hole size can be monitored and adjusted on the fly, and hole spacing can be changed very easily. The same laser platform supports cutting films in the packaging industry.

Our CO2 lasers scribe easy-tear lines in paper sachets

Easy-tear scribing

Our CO2 lasers can be used to create easy opening pouches and sachets for various food products. The laser is used to selectively weaken the packaging material without cutting through the film, enabling it to tear easily along the scribed line. This ensures that the pouch remains airtight until opened by the consumer.

The MULTISCAN® VS and MULTISCAN® HE are available in three wavelengths, to suit different packaging films. The process is fast and highly flexible; the same laser could be used to scribe, mark and perforate the packaging as required. The non-contact nature of the process means there is no downtime due to tool wear or breakage.

Our CO2 lasers kiss cut self-adhesive labels

Kiss cutting self-adhesive labels

Kiss cutting is a form of laser cutting in the packaging industry that selectively cuts the top layer of a material, leaving the underlying layers intact. For example, our CO2 lasers can be used for kiss cutting self-adhesive labels made from paper, plastic, or a combination of both.

While traditional die cutting is well suited for this rapid, high-volume process, a laser die cutting machine for paper provides far greater flexibility for packaging. Cutting outlines can be changed as often as desired with no need for additional tooling, and the process can be applied to a wide range of materials.

The high stability of Luxinar’s lasers is critical in laser cutting for the packaging industry, particularly in kiss cutting applications, where the laser must consistently cut the sticker and adhesive without damaging the carrier or backing paper. Different material types and thicknesses are accommodated by adjustment of the laser parameters.

In addition, our lasers are available in three different wavelengths, allowing the laser to be tailored according to the absorption of the label material in some cases.Recommended products: SR series and SCX35, OEM series (10,25 µm), SR AOM series
