Traceability for pharmaceutical products and medical devices through laser marking
Product traceability is critically important in the pharmaceutical industry. Stringent regulations exist to ensure that faulty or contaminated drugs can be traced and isolated, and counterfeit or black-market products can be identified and removed from the supply chain.
CO2 lasers mark information on pharmaceutical packaging materials, including card, foil, plastic and glass. Human-readable text and Data Matrix codes are applied directly on the production line, on the fly. Laser marks are permanent and indelible.
Not restricted to packaging applications, our CO2 lasers are useful across the medical industry, where they can cut, drill, perforate and mark a range of products. This includes laser marking medical device components where clear identification matters.
Our CO2 lasers mark glass vials with data matrix codes
Glass laser marking
CO2 lasers are an effective solution for medical device laser marking, applying a range of information to glass syringes, vials and tubes for the medical and pharmaceutical industries. Traceability of these products is critical, so the permanent and tamper-proof nature of the laser code is a distinct advantage.
Coding directly on the glass means that the information is not lost if the product is separated from its packaging, or if an adhesive label is removed. Our glass laser marking systems can apply both human-readable text and 2D Data Matrix codes on the production line, on the fly, and the glass can be marked hot or cold at any stage of the manufacturing process.

Our CO2 lasers mark pharmaceutical packaging
Pharmaceutical packaging marking
Many drugs and medications are packaged in card boxes, which must be marked with an array of information for traceability purposes. The laser ablates the inked coating on the card, resulting in very high quality and easily legible marks.
CO2 laser marking of medical devices with variable information such as manufacturing dates, batch codes, barcodes, QR and 2D Data Matrix codes on the production line, on the fly, continuously updates the information as required.
The laser marking process for medical devices is quick, clean, and reliable. Marks are indelible and tamper-proof, and consumable costs are effectively non-existent once the laser coder is installed. This makes laser coding an attractive alternative to traditional ink-based technologies.

Our CO2 lasers mark plastic syringe covers
Plastic marking
Laser marking plastics cover a wide range of plastic products, from packaging films and bottles to medical devices. The appearance of the mark depends strongly on the type of plastic used.
In many cases, the laser induces no color change in the plastic, resulting in an engraved mark which is unobtrusive and does not spoil the appearance of the product. When medical device laser marking requires a more visible mark with high contrast, special additives can be used. This also happens with many pearlized plastics, as well as PVC.

Our CO2 lasers mark medical devices
Black laser marking for medical devices
Our ultrashort-pulse lasers enable high-contrast black marking on stainless steel and other metals, creating permanent, corrosion-resistant marks that meet strict medical industry requirements. This process is ideal for laser marking medical devices like surgical instruments and implants with traceability data including Data Matrix codes, serial numbers, or logos. The result is precise, indelible marking without damaging the material surface, ensuring long-term readability, patient safety, and full compliance with regulatory standards.

Our CO2 lasers drill holes in tablets
Osmotic pump tablet drilling
CO2 lasers can drill holes in tablets for the controlled release of medication. One or more small holes are drilled in a rigid tablet with a semi-permeable outer membrane, and water is absorbed through the membrane by osmosis as the tablet passes through the body. This pushes the active drug through the laser-drilled opening(s) in the tablet and into the digestive tract.
Lasers up to 1 kW may be used in this application, using high peak power to perform direct beam, single-shot drilling at very high speeds. Alternatively, the laser may be used in conjunction with a 2D scanner for greater flexibility and control of the hole size, depth and shape.

Our CO2 lasers cut plastic dental aligners
Dental aligner cutting
Clear aligners offer patients a discreet and comfortable alternative to traditional braces, relying on a series of precisely manufactured aligners to gradually move teeth into position. With each patient typically requiring 30 or more aligners, efficient, high-quality production is essential. Made from transparent medical-grade thermoplastic polymers such as polyurethane, PET, and polypropylene, these materials strongly absorb CO₂ laser energy—making our CO₂ lasers the ideal solution for medical device laser marking and precision cutting. The result is fast, cost-effective manufacturing with smooth, high-quality edges that minimize manual finishing, ensure a consistent fit, and enhance patient comfort while enabling reliable, scalable production.
